Contemporary Landscape Architecture Conference 2023 edition

Soil as the basis for ecosystem design

November 10, 2023 Kraków

Soil is the basis of life on our planet, but unfortunately it is also the element most overlooked in the process of designing and managing greenery. Why do we pay so little attention to the soil? Instead of noticing and adapting to the existing condition and thus appreciating the resource that is the soil, we replace it, cover it with a "rag", and fertilize it chemically, acting against nature and common sense. We completely ignore the living part of the soil, despising and even killing all life without which the soil ceases to be soil. We observe the use of repetitive sets of plant species in the designs of various habitats. Regardless of whether it is a home garden, a housing estate, a city, a village, Pomerania or Podkarpacie zone. Plant combinations of this type are independent of habitat conditions, including the soil context. This may be easier in terms of presentation in visualizations, faster, but not better.

Soil is the basis of all terrestrial ecosystems. Without healthy, living soil, we cannot combat climate change. This problem applies not only to industrial agriculture or forests, but also as landscape architects we can influence the increase in soil sequestration. At the same time, we benefit from the quality of our projects, creating a resilient, healthy and great-looking environment.

Issues related to soil are a continuation of the considerations on Ecosystem Based Design initiated by SAK in 2022. We cordially invite you to participate in this unique event. Let's learn from each other and discuss so that we can change the world for the better!
